At Hoopoe Land, the children in teacher Nancy’s class have their own narratives that happen within a multi-cultural
South African context. Their circumstances vary from trauma (a taxi accident, xenophobia, a house burning down and
family violence), medical conditions (a heart defect, a contagious lung disease and cerebral palsy) to different
family compositions (adoption and an absent father). There is background information about the theme of each story
with examples for discussion topics.

The author, Ronél van der Watt, holds a PhD in Child Psychology (UFS). The stories are based on her experience as
a clinical psychologist of almost 34 years.

The illustrator, Mandé du Plessis, is a graphic designer with an honours degree in art history (UFS) and a bachelor degree
